Sauerkraut…it seems people either love it or hate it. There really doesn’t seem to be many people who are neutral on the subject. I grew up eating it with hot dogs cut up in it and it is okay that way, but I have made it so much better.
Sauerkraut can be delicious on it’s own and is also great topping a kraut dog. I grew up eating kraut dogs from Weinerschnitzel. Weinerschnitzel is a fast food hotdog restaurant in California. That was actually my very first real job. I, also, grew up eating country style ribs and kraut. I know…it sounds kind of weird, but, don’t knock it until you try it. It’s actually really, really good. Delicious, even! My recipe for that is coming up very soon.
HELPFUL TIPS FOR SIMPLE SAUERKRAUT AND DOGS RECIPE
Many store bought sauerkraut brands are pretty sour, but when you add certain ingredients it helps tame it down a bit. Like adding hotdogs, the fat that cooks out of the dogs helps mellow the zip just a bit. That being said, I have found a stellar sauerkraut that is actually pretty damned good straight from the container, but even better when used in my recipe 🙂
Cook long enough for all, or most of the juice to cook away.
INGREDIENTS
- Butter – Real
- Onion – I use sweet yellow
- Apple – honey crisp is my favorite, but any red apple will do.
- Caraway seeds – dried
- Garlic – fresh and grated
- Sauerkraut – The VERY best I have found is Wildbrine brand from Costco. I am not affiliated with Costco, so I don’t have a link, but they have some amazing products and this is one of them. It is SOOOO good. Much more mild, in my opinion than many other brands. I’ve added a photo so you know what to look for.
- Beef broth – I use bone broth
- Hot Dogs – I am not the biggest fan of hot dogs unless they are really good ones and they have to be beef. I tried some new ones recently from Trader Joe’s and I love them. They are uncured hot dogs without any nitrates and the beef used has no antibiotics or added hormones AND they are really tasty. I’ve added a photo so you know what to look for.

Equipment

- Grater
Ingredients
- 4 Tablespoons real butter
- 1 small to medium yellow onion diced
- 1 small to medium honey crisp apple or whatever red apple you have on hand, diced
- 1 teaspoon caraway seeds
- 2 large cloves garlic grated
- 50 ounces sauerkraut good quality
- 1 cup beef broth I use bone broth
- 16 ounces hot dogs good quality, cut into bite sized pieces
Instructions
- In a large pan on medium-high heat, melt butter.
- To the melted butter, add the caraway seeds, diced onions, and the diced apple.
- Cook until the onions and apple are tender and ever so slightly browned, about 5 minutes.
- Add the garlic and cook for 1 minute.
- Add the kraut ( including the juice), beef broth and cut up hot dogs.
- Cook uncovered for 30 minutes, or until most of the juice is cooked away, Keep a very close eye on it because once the juice and broth start to cook away, the kraut mixture will burn easily.
