For years I’ve wanted the refried beans I make at home to taste more like the beans I’ve enjoyed at Mexican restaurants. I’ve tried every brand refried bean there is. Well, I’ve tried all the brands I have access to. I’ve always added some water to try to make them a little creamier, or less clumpy, but that just didn’t do it for me. Finally, after experimenting, I have found the way we all like them best. I hope you enjoy my recipe for Quick Restaurant Style Refried Beans as much as we have.
A family member of mine, at one time, worked with a man who, at one point, managed a Mexican restaurant. He said that the key to making really good refried beans is adding lard. Typically, I never use lard in my cooking because I know it isn’t healthy, BUT, in this case I made an exception and tried it. I mean, it’s not like we eat them all the time. It really does make them better.
Refried beans are a great side to serve with so many different dishes and this recipe makes them even better. Seriously, it takes them to a whole new level with very few ingredients and very little time.
HELPFUL HINTS FOR MAKING QUICK RESTAURANT STYLE REFRIED BEANS
Use the lard. Store the unused portion in the refrigerator.
It is so simple to make these refried beans that you can make them like this before adding them to dishes like burritos, or nachos.
Heat the pan on medium before adding the lard. Once the lard is melted, add the refried beans and cream the lard and beans together. Once those are blended and heated, add the sour cream and granulated onion powder.
